Vice President Jessica Alupo and Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi have commissioned two key infrastructure projects in Katakwi District under the Local Economic Growth Support Project (LEGS).

The initiatives a shared solar mini-grid in Kanapa, Opeta Village, and the Orungo Corner Water Supply Scheme aim to expand access to clean energy and safe water, driving local economic development.

The Orungo Corner Water Supply Scheme features a 9.2-kilometer distribution network serving six villages—Apuuton, Ayopo, Ameritele, Acera, Amukurat, and Orungo Corner.

The project benefits 4,024 people, raising Katakwi District’s safe water coverage to 75.8%. A community-led water user committee will oversee its sustainability.

Vice President Alupo described the Kanapa Shared Solar Mini-Grid in Magoro Sub-County as a transformative development.

The 16kW solar system comprises 28 high-capacity panels (580W each) and two 8kW inverters, designed to support three-phase applications for small businesses and households.

Operating on a prepaid model similar to Yaka, the system ensures consumers use only what they have paid for. Currently, 41 connections have been established, benefiting 34 households and businesses.

The project is also powering local enterprises, including three-phase grinding mills, electric motorcycles, and popcorn machines.

Minister Magyezi highlighted the LEGS initiative—funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Lives and Livelihood Fund (LLF), and the Government of Uganda as a key driver of Uganda’s Local Economic Development (LED) Policy.

“These projects go beyond providing electricity and water; they empower communities, create jobs, and spur economic growth,” Magyezi said. He directed the district administration to integrate the initiatives into the District Operation and Maintenance Plan for long-term sustainability.
