The Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jessica Rose Alupo Epel has launched the construction of a 12.4-kilometer road from Oburatum-Angolekit to Obwobwo in Ongongoja sub-county, Katakwi district.

The project, valued at over shs 1.3 billion, is expected to be completed within eight months.

The road construction is funded under the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and supervised by the Katakwi district local government in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.

The project aims to enhance accessibility to essential services such as markets, health facilities, and agricultural

Katakwi District Engineer, Andrew Echatu, emphasized the importance of the road in improving connectivity and promoting economic activities in the region.

“This road is crucial in linking communities to social services, markets, and farms, which will significantly enhance local livelihoods,” Echatu stated.

James Okello, the LC1 chairperson of Oburatum village, expressed gratitude for the development but urged district leaders to address other challenges in the area.

“While we appreciate the commencement of road works, Ongongoja sub-county still struggles with poor health services, inadequate education facilities, and dilapidated road infrastructure,” Okello said.

Brig. Gen. Wilberforce Nserunkuma, the 3rd Division Infantry Commander, noted that the road would also play a key role in enhancing security in the Teso region.

“With improved road access, security personnel will be able to respond swiftly, particularly in cases of cattle rustling and other security threats,” Nserunkuma explained.

Francis Okello, the Director of Uganda Martyrs Housing and Constructions Company Limited said they have commenced work on the project, with clearing and leveling as the first phase.

He revealed that the next steps would involve drainage installation, culvert placement, and bridge construction.

Okello assured residents of high-quality road engineering, citing his past success in maintaining and constructing key roads in Katakwi, Serere, Amuria, and Kumi districts.

“Our commitment is to deliver a durable road that meets all engineering standards,” he promised.

However while flagging off the project, Vice President Alupo emphasized the need for quality work and warned against substandard construction.

“We cannot afford to waste government resources on shoddy projects. This road must meet the highest standards,” she asserted.

She also urged the contractor to employ local residents as casual laborers, ensuring that the project benefits the community beyond infrastructure development.

LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo hailed the project as a major boost for the district, noting that its funding exceeds the district’s annual road budget. He instructed the contractor to prioritize maintenance in flood-prone areas to ensure sustainability.

The road construction is expected to transform transport in Ongongoja sub-county, improving service delivery, security, and economic opportunities for the people of Katakwi.
