The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is mourning the tragic death of Pte Jonathan Olara, a ranger who was killed on November 4 in an encounter with armed poachers in the Karenga Community Wildlife Area.
Karenga is part of the Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA).
Pte Olara, known for his dedication and passion for wildlife conservation, was fatally shot while on a routine patrol.
In a statement, UWA extended condolences to Olara’s family, pledging to provide support as they face this difficult time.
“We mourn the tremendous loss of Pte Olara Jonathan, whose bravery and service to protecting Uganda’s wildlife will be deeply missed,” the statement read.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by rangers and conservationists who work in regions plagued by poaching and illegal wildlife activities.
This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers confronting UWA’s staff, who risk their lives to safeguard Uganda’s wildlife heritage.
To honour Pte Olara’s commitment to conservation, UWA has vowed to strengthen its fight against poaching and wildlife crime.
The agency remains resolute in protecting Uganda’s ecosystems, working alongside local communities, government authorities, and conservation partners.
UWA is also collaborating with other security agencies to ensure those responsible for the killing are brought to justice.
“We call upon all Ugandans to support our efforts and stand united against poaching and wildlife crime,” UWA urged.
