James Kasigwa, executive director of UNBS, highlighted that this malpractice not only compromises product quality but also hinders manufacturers from accessing the competitive East African market and beyond.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is preparing to prosecute a network of individuals involved in forging quality standard marks to sell substandard goods in the Ugandan market.

James Kasigwa, executive director of UNBS, highlighted that this malpractice not only compromises product quality but also hinders manufacturers from accessing the competitive East African market and beyond.

As Uganda joins the global community in celebrating World Standards Day, the prevalence of substandard goods continues to rise, despite numerous efforts by UNBS to identify and apprehend the offenders.

The standards body has reported that it is on the brink of taking legal action against those forging quality marks, which allows them to illegally penetrate the Ugandan market with inferior products.

Kasigwa emphasized the serious implications of this issue, stating, “You can’t have a fake quality standards mark and access the market. It limits products from engaging in a competitive environment and compromises human health.”

UNBS management has urged the public to remain vigilant when purchasing consumer goods, especially those displaying suspicious quality marks.
