As Uganda prepares to conclude its chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China this year, Ayebare emphasised the significance of COP 29 in Baku, where crucial decisions on climate change funding will be made.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has lauded Uganda and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for their leadership role in the recent Summit of the Future. The summit resulted in the adoption of a Pact for the Future, which includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.

In a message conveyed by Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H.E. Adonia Ayebare, Guterres expressed his deep appreciation for Uganda’s close cooperation with the UN and its efforts to strengthen the rules-based multilateral system.

He also acknowledged Uganda’s long-standing partnership with the UN in addressing global challenges and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to further strengthening this relationship.

During a briefing with President Museveni, Ayebare highlighted Uganda’s achievements as Chair of the Group of 77 and China. He noted that Uganda’s leadership has been instrumental in driving negotiations on climate change and securing a historic Pact for the Future.

As Uganda prepares to conclude its chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China this year, Ayebare emphasized the significance of COP 29 in Baku, where crucial decisions on climate change funding will be made.

Looking ahead, Uganda will continue to play a prominent role in international affairs as the Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement for the next two years. This marks a significant milestone for Uganda, as it becomes the only country to have chaired both the Group of 77 and the Non-Aligned Movement.
