Uganda and Kenya have reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations in tourism and trade, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and infrastructure to spur regional growth.

At the 3rd Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism Conference held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, leaders stressed the need for cross-border collaboration to unlock East Africa’s vast potential.

Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism, Martin Bahinduka Mugarra, announced a $3 billion plan to extend the standard gauge railway to Malaba, aimed at easing travel and trade.

“We are committed to fostering a private-sector-friendly environment for shared prosperity,” Mugarra noted.

Kenya’s Kilifi County Deputy Governor, Flora Mbetsa Chibule, highlighted sustainability and technology as key to elevating tourism. “Protecting natural resources and leveraging technology will position East Africa as a top global destination,” she said.

Yogi Birigwa, President of the Uganda Tourism Association, emphasized post-pandemic recovery and the need to reduce barriers to intra-regional trade.

“By collaborating, we can create seamless travel experiences and grow regional tourism,” Birigwa stated.

The conference, attended by over 700 delegates, tackled challenges such as non-tariff barriers and restrictive travel advisories.

Stakeholders agreed on joint initiatives, including a familiarization trip to Kenya’s coastline and collaborative marketing campaigns, to promote East Africa’s rich cultural and natural attractions.

As the event concluded, both nations pledged to work together toward sustainable growth and economic transformation, underscoring the importance of unity in realizing East Africa’s shared vision.
