Tragedy struck on the Iganga-Bugiri Road at Nabitovu when a fuel tanker collided with a cement trailer, resulting in a devastating fire that claimed two lives.
The accident occurred when the driver of the fuel tanker lost control and veered off his lane to the opposite side, crashing into the cement trailer.
The impact saw both vehicles burst into flames, trapping the occupants inside.
The driver of the cement truck and a female passenger were unable to escape. The two were burned beyond recognition.
The driver of the fuel tanker was luckier and managed to escape with his life.
Locals blamed the accident on reckless driving and the narrow road, which has been a concern for residents.
“The road is too narrow and drivers often speed recklessly, putting lives at risk,” said a witness.
The charred remains of the unidentified woman was transported to hospital.
The identities of the deceased had not been released at the time of filing in this story, and investigations were ongoing.
The Busoga East Police spokesperson, Ms Dianah Nandaula, said investigations are underway to establish the cause of the accident.
However, the occurrence of the incident was seen as a grace to a section of the locals as they plundered sacks of cement in the pretext of offering help to offload them.
The place fatal spot is the same small stretch where people died in the 90s attempting to scoop fuel following an accident that involved a fuel tanker.
