Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among has commended a delegation of ambassadors and heads of missions from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for their support in the wake of sanctions imposed on her by the European Union and the United States.
These sanctions followed her opposition to homosexuality and allegations of corruption.
The delegation, consisting of over ten ambassadors, including Salek Sghair of the Arab Democratic Republic, Mohammed Khalil Faloudah of Saudi Arabia, Amokrane Mourad of Algeria, and Fardowsa Mohammed Kanyare of Somalia, met with Speaker Among to strengthen ties with Uganda’s Parliament.
During the discussions, Among expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the ambassadors for their unwavering support when she faced sanctions from the US and EU.
“This is the first time Parliament has held such a meeting, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to those who stood by me when we were rejected, humiliated, and when we needed countries on our side,” Ms Among said.
“Your countries gave me an open invitation, regardless of the sanctions, because you believe in our traditions.”
She also praised the open job policies created by Arab countries but cautioned them against the mistreatment of domestic workers at the hands of their nationals.
This meeting marked a significant diplomatic moment, highlighting the solidarity and support from the Islamic nations during a period of international tension.
