The South Sudan Vice President in charge of Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel has committed to support fast-tracking of the country’s digital transformation to promote commerce, development, peace building and reconciliation efforts.

On Tuesday, Dr. Bol Mel engaged with Michael Makuei Lueth, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services to chart the course for fast-tracking South Sudan’s digital transformation.

According to a statement from the VP’s office, the engagement focused on the urgent implementation of important ICT infrastructure projects.
“At the core of the discussions was the urgent implementation of key ICT infrastructure projects, particularly the expansion of the national fiber network,” said the statement.

Adding: “The Vice President emphasized the need to build a modern digital backbone capable of powering connectivity, commerce, and communication across every corner of the nation.”

The establishment of digital innovation hubs and skilling were majorly discussed to equip the young population with the necessary skills to join the global digital economy.

“In alignment with the vision of His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Vice President also advocated for the establishment of digital innovation hubs and the rollout of nationwide digital skilling programs. These efforts will empower citizens – especially the youth – with the tools to innovate, create jobs, and take part in the global digital economy,” noted the statement.

They further explored how digital platforms can serve as vital instruments for peacebuilding, reconciliation, and national unity.

“In a country as diverse as ours, technology must be a bridge; fostering dialogue, understanding, and shared identity,” said Dr. Bol Mel.

Adding: “This engagement has laid a strong foundation for a digitally connected South Sudan and set the country on a transformative path that promises economic resilience, social cohesion, and lasting progress for generations to come.”

South Sudan has faced several years of armed conflict, but according to the World Bank and the IMF, it is among the fastest growing economies in the world with a projected 17% GDP growth for 2025.
