The Rev Michael Chorey has been consecrated as the fifth bishop of Karamoja Diocese.

The event, held at Moroto Boma Ground, attracted hundreds of Christian faithful from the region and beyond.

The consecration was led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rev Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, who called for unity and peace in the region.

He urged the congregation to support their new bishop in his mission to nurture the spiritual growth of the diocese.

Prominent leaders graced the ceremony, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, who represented President Kaguta Museveni.

She conveyed the President’s congratulations and expressed his support for Bishop Chorey as he assumes his new spiritual leadership role.

The President also pledged to work closely with the new bishop to eradicate poverty in Karamoja at the grassroots level and to promote economic development.

“The government is ready to collaborate with the church in fostering peace, unity, and prosperity in Karamoja,” the Vice President said in her speech.

Delegates from neighboring regions, including the Turkana County Government, West Pokot, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, attended the event, underscoring the strong bonds and shared faith among the Ateker pastoral communities.

In his first address as bishop, Bishop Chorey expressed his gratitude and commitment to serving the people of Karamoja.

He emphasized the need for continued faith, hope, and collaboration to achieve both spiritual and social development in the region.

“I am deeply humbled by this honor and am committed to leading this diocese towards greater unity and spiritual growth,” Bishop Chorey said.

Top regional leaders, including the Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs, Florence Nambozo, and Esther Davinia Anyakun, the State Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development in charge of Employment and Industrial Relations, were also in attendance.

Regional members of parliament and district chairpersons participated in the event, which was further enriched by beautiful songs from church choirs across the region.

Bishop Michael Chorey takes over the mantle of leadership from Bishop Joseph Abura, who has served as Bishop of Karamoja Diocese since 2006.

In a special announcement during the ceremony, Vice President Jessica Alupo revealed that the new bishop would receive a car from the government to assist him in his duties. She invited Bishop Chorey to Kampala, where he would receive the vehicle.

The consecration marks a new chapter for the Karamoja Diocese, with Bishop Chorey set to lead efforts toward spiritual revival and socio-economic transformation in the region.
