The retired Dean of Namirembe Cathedral, Rev. Canon Augustine Magala Musiwuffu, has criticized religious leaders for their silence on pressing national issues, including the recent imprisonment of opposition stalwart Dr. Kizza Besigye and the reported kidnappings of some National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new Dean, Rev. Canon Dustan Kiwanuka Mazinga, Rev. Musiwuffu expressed concern over what he described as the clergy’s growing indifference to social injustices.

“The most painful thing is that Dr. Besigye is in jail, but some clergy dismiss his issues as trivial. Many religious leaders today are only asking for cars from the President instead of standing with the people and raising concerns that affect them,” Musiwuffu said.

Uganda is currently grappling with political tensions following Dr. Besigye’s arrest and allegations of opposition supporters being kidnapped.

Rev. Musiwuffu accused some religious leaders of prioritizing personal gains and aligning with political leaders while ignoring the hardships faced by ordinary citizens.

He also pointed out other national challenges, including poor road infrastructure, inadequate education services, and what he termed purposeless leadership.

He urged the government to promote fair governance and ensure equal opportunities for all Ugandans.

“Uganda faces significant challenges, and as we head toward the upcoming elections, leaders must govern with purpose. It should not be a crime to speak out or to come from a region different from those in power,” he added.

The inauguration ceremony, held at Namirembe Cathedral, was attended by the retired Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, Archdeacons, Canons, and other church leaders.

Rev. Canon Dustan Kiwanuka Mazinga was officially installed as the 11th Dean of Namirembe Cathedral, succeeding Rev. Canon Jonathan Kisawuzi.

The Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, Rt. Rev. Moses Banja, presided over the ceremony and prayed for the new dean’s leadership.
