The Uganda Driver Licensing System (UDLS) has reassured drivers that delayed renewal of a driving licence does not result in its cancellation.

In a recent post on X, UDLS clarified that driving licences remain valid within the system until renewal is completed, even if the renewal is delayed.

However, a driving licence is considered lapsed if it remains unrenewed for 24 months after its expiration date. Drivers with lapsed licences are required to undergo refresher training with a licensed driving school before retaking a driving test.

The test is conducted by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV), with a fee of UGX 25,000 per class on the driving licence.

Once the test is passed, the IOV will issue a Certificate of Competence, which drivers can then present at any UDLS facility to complete the renewal process.

UDLS also outlined a checklist of mandatory documents needed for licence renewal, including the original expired driving licence, a police letter in case of loss or damage, proof of payment, and valid identification.

This process highlights the importance of keeping driving licences updated and avoiding lapses to prevent complications during renewal. UDLS encourages drivers to renew their licences before expiration under the slogan , ” Renew it Before it
