Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has pledged that the government will reduce electricity tariffs for industrialists to five US cents per unit, following President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to the Ministry of Energy.

This move aims to address concerns over the high cost of power, which has been driving up production expenses for industrialists.

Nabbanja made these remarks during the official closure of the Mbale Park Trade Fair and Bazaar in Mbale City, stressing that industrial parks are key to Uganda’s ambition to transition into a middle-income economy.

Nabbanja emphasised the importance of reducing electricity costs to boost industrial productivity.

“The president directed me and the Ministry of Energy to reduce power tariffs to five US cents for industrialists. The current cost of 9.7 US cents per unit makes production very expensive, but we won’t let this continue,” she stated.

Nabbanja reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing industrial parks across Uganda as part of its industrialisation strategy, with the Mbale Industrial Park being a key operational hub.

She highlighted the power tariff reduction as a crucial step towards lowering production costs and increasing market competitiveness.

The Prime Minister also launched two new factories in the park, marking further progress in Uganda’s industrial growth and reiterating the government’s focus on job creation and local manufacturing.

Nabbanja also commended the Chinese government for aligning with Uganda’s Vision 2040 by continuing to invest in industrial zones.

She stressed that industrial parks are key to Uganda’s ambition of achieving middle-income status.

“The Sino-Uganda Industrial Parks initiative is driving value addition, promoting exports, and reducing reliance on imports,” she noted. “These parks are creating opportunities for employment and technology transfer, which are vital for our industrialization agenda.”

Nabbanja praised the achievements of the Mbale Industrial Park, which has generated over 6,000 jobs, and expressed optimism about its continued positive impact on the national economy.

She encouraged local entrepreneurs to seize the opportunities presented by industrial parks and to form partnerships with international investors.

Nabbanja congratulated the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development  and Mbale Park for successfully hosting the trade fair, which she called a milestone in advancing Uganda’s Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) strategy.

“Congratulations to Mbale Park and the Ministry of Finance for organizing this important event,” she said. “This is a significant step towards promoting local production and trade partnerships. Let us all embrace the BUBU spirit.”

Minister of State for Privatization and Investment, Evelyn Anite, urged Ugandans to support local industries by purchasing Ugandan-made products.

She highlighted the trade fair’s display of over 100 locally manufactured products sold at factory prices, providing an excellent opportunity for Ugandans to embrace the “Buy Uganda” initiative.
