The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has announced a Shs1 million fine on any person that will be found illegally felling trees in Bugoma forest reserve in Kagadi District.

While in contact with communities in Mangoma village Kinyarugonjo Sub-county, NFA instead urged people to embrace the habit of tree planting to become part of their life.

NFA spent the better part of Thursday sensitising residents of Mangoma to raise awareness on forestry restoration and sustainable forest management.

Mr Alex Ebonyo, the Kisindi sector manager, announced that NFA will impose heavy fines of up to shs one million on individuals engaging in illegal activities in Bugoma forest.

“We talk and talk but some people seem not ready to listen, now we have decided to impose heavy fines of shs one million aimed at letting Ugandans know that as an Authority we are very strict and serious with regards to protecting forests,” he said.

“Once you are caught in the forest, count yourself as paying Shs1 million fine.”

Mr Ebonyo though noted with concern that there are people who go to communities impersonating NFA staff.

“We have learnt with concern that some people come claiming to be our staff and let the acts of cutting down trees go on,” he said.

“Those that come either asking for money, or anything are not our staff and don’t listen to them. We are strictly saying no to cutting down of trees in forest reserves, and whoever will be got will face the law.”

Godfrey Kayemba, the Kinyarugonjo sub-county chairperson, said there were high ranking officers in security that have been instrumental in forest degradation.

“In situations where people are arrested, calls from big shots in forces come in directing their release,” Kayemba said.

NFA, with support from the World Bank, are implementing a project aimed at investing in forests and protected areas for climate smart development.
