The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced plans to initiate legal proceedings against the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing the electoral body of deliberately frustrating its candidates’ nominations for LC5 chairperson positions in several districts.

In a statement released on Monday, NUP officials alleged that returning officers and electoral registrars in districts such as Ssembabule, Katakwi, and Nakaseke, among others, imposed undue obstacles that effectively blocked party candidates from completing the nomination process.

“This appears to be a deliberate scheme aimed at undermining our participation in the forthcoming local government elections,” said NUP Secretary General,Lewis Rubongoya, adding that the party had already raised its concerns with the EC. “If no corrective action is taken, we are prepared to seek redress through the courts.”

The party maintains that the alleged irregularities not only disenfranchise their candidates but also deny the electorate a fair and democratic choice in the upcoming elections.

The Electoral Commission has yet to issue an official response to the allegations.

This latest development underscores rising tensions in the run-up to the local government polls, with opposition parties increasingly calling for transparency, accountability, and equitable treatment in the electoral process.

NUP has urged the EC to take immediate steps to rectify the situation and ensure that all candidates are given a fair opportunity to participate in accordance with the law.
