The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has reported a significant increase in the number of candidates registered for the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
A total of 798,742 pupils are set to sit for the exams, marking a 6.6% rise from the 749,374 candidates registered in 2023.
This surge of nearly 50,000 candidates underscores the growing demand for primary education across the country.
UNEB Executive Director Daniel Odongo highlighted the growing responsibilities this expansion places on the board, particularly in managing the examination process and ensuring the security and fairness of the exams.
“We are witnessing an ever-expanding education system, which places additional demands on our resources, both in terms of logistics and security,” Odongo stated.
He also addressed concerns about examination malpractice, which has historically involved invigilators who may have been vulnerable due to low remuneration.
In response, UNEB has pledged to increase the pay for invigilators to support the smooth and fair administration of the exams.
As candidate numbers continue to rise, UNEB remains committed to maintaining the credibility of national examinations while accommodating the expanding cohort of learners in Uganda’s education system.
