Sironko – The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has today officially consecrated St Matthew’s Cathedral Buhugu in Sironko District, marking a significant milestone for North Mbale Diocese.

The event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of episcopal ministry by the Bishop of North Mbale Diocese,  the Rt Rev Samuel Gidudu, who attributed the cathedral’s successful completion to unity within the diocese.

“We continue to appeal for your support as we venture into economic infrastructure projects like commercial buildings that can generate income for the Diocese,” Bishop Gidudu said.

“Our focus is now on holistic growth and sustainability.”

Archbishop Kaziimba commended Bishop Gidudu and the Christian community for completing the cathedral in just five years.

He urged the congregation to use the 1,500-seat sanctuary for spiritual enrichment and community building.

The archbishop also appealed to the government to restore cooperative unions, highlighting their potential to spur economic development.

“I am impressed by the Bugisu Cooperative Union under the leadership of Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi. The Union employs thousands and adds value to our coffee. I urge the government to restore cooperative unions nationwide to create jobs and stimulate growth,” he said.

President Museveni’s Message

President Museveni, in a message delivered by Local Government minister Raphael Magyezi, applauded Bishop Gidudu for his visionary leadership and the diocese’s development efforts.

“Government sees all spiritual leaders as partners in development. I encourage the Church and all people to collaborate in implementing programs that uplift communities from poverty and improve welfare,” President Museveni’s message read.

He also called on leaders from all sectors—civil, political, social, and religious—to mobilise their communities to support government initiatives aimed at transformation.
