President Museveni on Sunday celebrated his 80th birthday in a special way, returning to Luweero where the five year liberation war started.

Museveni celebrated the 80th birthday celebrations with a thanksgiving ceremony held at Kijaguzo Catholic parish in Nakaseke district which hold a special place in the NRA liberation war as his mother, the late Esteri Kokundeka was at one time hidden at the place.

Speaking during the function, the president thanked the locals for supporting the war that ushered in the current government.

“I thank God for this gift of life but also salute my parents who brought me up. I also thank Mama Janet for giving me a very good and big family. I thank the fighters , children of the fighters, grandchildren for joining us to save Uganda,” Museveni said.

“This celebration is  not about Museveni because he didn’t reach all these milestones alone. We are really celebrating the struggle of the people of Uganda in which I happen to be active but the success was because of us all.”

To show his appreciation, Museveni donated shs50 million to Kijaguzo Catholic parish but also a bus to a local primary school.

Not happy with slow dev’t

The president said whereas he appreciated the transformation in form of housing, some things are still lacking.

“When I move around,  I see there has been some improvement in houses.  During the war, they were grass thatched or using reeds and poles but everyone is using bricks, cement and iron sheets,” he said.

Museveni took a swipe at the local population for failure to sue the power given to them by the NRM.

“While fighting, I had long experience with the lack of care by structures of government during colonial times and after independence. That’s why while still in the bush we agreed when we take power, administrators can remain but we should have our own people elected by people to supervise and look after the interests of the people,” Museveni said.

He said when the NRM came into power, the allow people to elect leaders from LC one up to LC5 to help supervise government programs on their behalf.

He however said it was appalling that the people of Luweero are not using these leaders for their own benefit.

“All these things you are talking about of people stealing your money ( for PDM) , you have the power. The issue Sof the land, no land lord can chase you from land legally. The laws we passed don’t allow it. You have leaders who would help you to deal with these problems since the law is done properly.”

He however said he would soon pay another visit to Luweero so he can discuss all these problems with the people to get solutions.
