In a rare display of unity, Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum have condemned the brutal actions of the security group known as JAT in the Kawempe North by-elections.
The legislators are demanding that the government immediately reign in JAT’s behavior, citing concerns over the elections’ integrity and the country’s global reputation.
“We cannot continue to watch as our citizens are brutalized by security forces,” said MP Sarah Opendi. “If you don’t want free and fair elections, then scrap them altogether.”
The legislators are questioning why JAT officers continue to mask their faces, suggesting that they may be hiding their identities to avoid accountability. “If they are not doing atrocities, why do they need to hide their faces?” one MP asked.
The government’s response to the situation remains to be seen, but the MPs’ united stance sends a strong message that the actions of JAT will no longer be tolerated.
