The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine, has today signed contracts for the upgrading and equipping of several health facilities in the Karamoja region. This initiative is part of the Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project Phase II, funded by the Italian Government with a budget of 10 million euros.

The project aims to significantly improve healthcare delivery in a region that has long faced challenges with inadequate infrastructure and equipment. Dr. Atwine stressed the importance of adhering to the agreed timelines and budget, warning contractors against delays or substandard work.

“Contractors must deliver within the stipulated 18-month period and ensure compliance with the financial scope. Any company found delivering poor-quality work will be blacklisted,” Dr. Atwine emphasized.

Health Facilities Set to Benefit

Several health facilities across Karamoja’s districts will benefit from the upgrades, including:

Amudat District:

    • Katabok Health Centre II will be upgraded to Health Centre III.
    • Karita Health Centre III will be upgraded to Health Centre IV.
    • Amudat General Hospital will undergo infrastructure improvements.

Abim District:

    • A new health centre will be constructed at Awach Subcounty.
    • Wilela Health Centre II will be upgraded to Health Centre III.

Napak District:

    • Apeitolim Health Centre II will be upgraded to Health Centre III.
    • Iriiri Health Centre III will be upgraded to Health Centre IV.
    • New health centres will be built in Kalochell and Poron Subcounties.

Nakapiripirit District:

Nabilatuk District:

    • Upgrades and improvements will be made at Locechat HC III, Loregndwat HC III, Nayonai Angikalio HC III, and Nabilatuk HC IV.

Commitment to Quality Healthcare

Dr. Atwine reiterated the government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare services to the Karamoja region and urged all stakeholders to closely monitor the project’s implementation. This initiative comes at a time when Karamoja’s health sector has faced scrutiny due to challenges such as a lack of accessible facilities and equipment. With these upgrades, the government aims to close the healthcare gap and improve health outcomes for residents.

The Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project Phase II is part of broader efforts to enhance Uganda’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in under-served regions.
