The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has held a high-level security meeting with regional police officers in Soroti District, focusing on tackling security challenges, strengthening collaboration, and reinforcing discipline within the Uganda Police Force.

The meeting, held at Soroti Hotel, brought together officers from Elgon, East Kyoga, North Kyoga, Mt. Moroto, and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU). Addressing the officers, Byakagaba emphasized the importance of teamwork and integrity in maintaining law and order.

“We discussed the security concerns in the commanders’ Areas of Responsibility and how to foster collaboration among officers,” Byakagaba said.

“I also emphasized the importance of discipline, urging officers to avoid corruption and observe human rights.”

The IGP highlighted the urgent need to fast-track the implementation of the sub-county policing model, which aims to improve security at the grassroots level, and to align police efforts with government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model.

“We must ensure that our policing strategies support government programs aimed at improving livelihoods,” he said. “Security and development go hand in hand.”

The meeting was attended by Regional Police Commanders, Division and District Commanders, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers, and Community Liaison Officers, reflecting a multi-agency approach to addressing crime and public safety concerns.

A senior police official who attended the meeting described it as “a necessary intervention” in strengthening coordination among security agencies.

“With the increasing security threats in various regions, such engagements ensure that officers are well-prepared and aligned with the force’s overall mission,” the officer said.

Byakagaba’s engagement with regional officers signals his commitment to improving policing efficiency and addressing the country’s security challenges at all levels.
