Uganda suffered a third straight World Cup loss against Jamaica when the two sides met in Cape Town on Monday in a Pool G game that ended 61-49.
The disappointing loss at the Cape Town International Conventions Centre reflected a different version of the She Cranes that had, two days earlier electrified fans when they faced defending champions New Zealand in their 44-54 loss.
The Sunshine Girls’ win in Cape Town handed the She Cranes their third straight loss at a World Cup competition following a 59-47 defeat at the 2015 tournament in Sydney before another 48-61 downfall at the Liverpool event.
She Cranes were in their usual mood from the starting whistle as Margaret Baagala took control of the centre but the Sunshine Girls frustrated any of their opponents’ moves – blocking attacking attempts.
Jamaica took a 38-21 lead at half time, and on resumption, Baagala was up to the task of serving shooters Mary Nuba and Shadiah Nassanga, who in turn converted to give Uganda a 16-11 lead in the 3rd quarter. But the last quarter spelt seemed a shared affair but it was too late for She Cranes as the game ended 61-49.
Uganda’s consolation came through Nassanga, who emerged as the Most Valuable Player.
Uganda takes a rest on Tuesday before facing Wales in yet another unpredictable fixture on Wednesday.
