Hope for more trade as Uganda, DRC abolish visa rule

Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo have agreed to abolish Visa requirements for their citizens to boost cross boarder trade and East Africa inter community integration Uganda foreign minister Mr Okello Oryem said the decision comes after agreement between the two countries \

“Both President Yoweri Museveni and Fel;ix Tshisekedi have been instrumental for pushing for this. This will enable our people top move more freely across, Oryem said.

According to official data, Uganda earned $241 million in trade surplus from DRC in 2020 and an estimated $177 million in informal trade exports which pushes the figure to $418 million  in trade earnings. Uganda’s main exports to DRC  are Cement, Palmoil, Rice, Sugar, cosmetics and iron materials.

The two countries have had ties even before DRC joined the East African community in 2021
