Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, has announced a significant move to by government to relocate potential landslide victims in Bududa and other high-risk mountainous areas with slopes exceeding 30 degrees above sea level.

Speaking to journalists at the Uganda media centre, Baryomunsi affirmed that government will allocate two acres of land and provide shs10 millions for each family member in compensation.

“A crucial decision has been made to allocate 2 acres of land and provide 10 million shillings to each family in Bududa for relocation to safer regions. This measure aims to mitigate the risks posed by the region’s susceptibility to landslides.” noted Baryomunsi

With the relocation process slated to commence in two months according to government, Dr. Baryomunsi urged those with the means of purchasing land independently to do so, assuring them of compensation from the government.

In light of Bududa’s history of devastating landslides, with the tragic events of March 2010 claiming over 100 lives, and another landslide in August 2022 leaving 50 households damaged and more than 300 people homeless, Baryomunsi noted that this decision is a critical step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents.

“We cannot afford to wait for another tragedy to strike. By taking proactive measures and involving the community, we aim to create a safer environment for the people of Bududa.”
