Ndorwa East legislator Wilfred Niwagaba has revealed the government’s plans to invest in sports infrastructure across Uganda.

Speaking during the launch of the Niwagaba Cup 2025 at Kyanamira Playground, he emphasised the importance of modern facilities in nurturing talent and promoting healthy living.

The Niwagaba Cup, which will see 27 parishes from Ndorwa East constituency compete, is set to conclude in August 2025.

Niwagaba highlighted the significance of such tournaments in identifying grassroots talent and providing opportunities for young athletes to grow.

During the event, he noted that parliament recently passed the National Development Plan IV, which includes provisions for investment in sports infrastructure.

Among the targeted regions is the Kigezi sub-region, with Kabale identified as a potential site for a grand stadium capable of hosting multiple sports activities.

“Our sports infrastructure has been in a poor state. If finances permit, we should see a state-of-the-art stadium in Kabale, the center of the Kigezi region,” Niwagaba said.

He also underscored the role of sports in fostering health, talent, and community engagement.

“Sports not only promote healthy living but also help identify talent at the grassroots level,” he said.

Bridget Asinga, woman councillor for Kyanamira sub-county, echoed these sentiments, highlighting sports as a tool to combat idleness among youth.

She urged young people to stay active and take advantage of the opportunities that sports can bring.

For years, Uganda’s athletes and sports teams have struggled with inadequate facilities, limiting their potential on competitive platforms.

While specifics of the government’s investment plan remain unclear, Niwagaba’s announcement suggests a renewed focus on elevating the country’s sports sector.

As the country moves forward, the development of modern sports facilities is expected to foster national unity, enhance local talent, and contribute to Uganda’s overall growth.
