Govt signs shs40bn contract for construction of Nansana Municipality roads

The Ugandan government has signed a shs40.9 billion contract to give  way for the construction and upgrading of four roads measuring  6.06 kilometers at a cost of shs40 billion Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.

The roads to be constructed by Winner Global Enterprises Construction Company are under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program aimed at enhancing mobility, accessibility and bolstering urban resilience with drainage improve.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at Nansana Municipality headquarters, Nansana Municipality Town Clerk Festo Tandeka said the roads to be constructed include Nansana – Nabweru road, New Era Nabweru Katooke Link, New Era Nabweru Lugoba and Nabweru Kazo Central Link.

“The project is to be completed in 18 months. The contractor is going to provide employment to our local people but also make use of services like houses which will enable our people benefit but also the night economy in this area is going to boom,” Tandeka said.

He asked the contractor to employ people from Nansana so that they can benefit from the project.

The Under Secretary Ministry of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Monica Edemachu told the contractors that they are required to deliver quality work and in time.

“Our humble appeal to you is to work closely with our teams to ensure that you put all the necessary safeguard measures and ensure implementation has no stopover at anyone moment. We want to compare your work with the work of other contractors who are foreign based to see if you can. The precedent you set will enable us in future procure more local contractors,” Edemachu said.

“This program is result-based. If you don’t perform, Nansana will lose marks and if you don’t address environmental issues, Nansana will have challenges. We don’t want to see this kind of scenario.”

She however raised concern over communities draining sewerage in water sources like streams and rivers which she said raises health issues for everyone.

The contract is part of  of the $566 million (Shs2.1 trillion) Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP) funded by the World Bank Group.

The beneficiaries include KCCA, Entebbe, Kira, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Mukono and Nansana municipalities as well as Mukono, Mpigi and Wakiso district local governments.

The program will be financed through a $566 million (Shs2.1 trillion) from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group.
