The Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, has issued a stern warning to school officials against raising tuition fees excessively, stating that such increases undermine the integrity of Uganda’s education system.

During the groundbreaking ceremony for a new science block and the inauguration of a dormitory complex at St Mary’s College Kisubi in Entebbe, Mrs Museveni emphasised that exorbitant fee hikes disrupt the government’s efforts to promote inclusive, equitable access to quality education, particularly for vulnerable students.

The new dormitory is set to accommodate over 600 students, while the science block—named in honour of the First Lady —is expected to cost over Shs8 billion.

“As we celebrate the achievements of this esteemed institution, we must acknowledge the white fathers who established this school in 1906 to educate boys in our country. The foundation they laid over a century ago is a testament to a mission accomplished,” said Mrs Museveni.

She also urged students to uphold core values and to combat indiscipline, warning that such behaviour can jeopardise their academic progress.

Chev Dr Saturnninus Kasozi Mulindwa, chairman of the Board of Governors, noted that numerous initiatives are underway to ensure the college maintains its high standards in academics, infrastructure development, and overall environment.

“This is a significant day for SMACK as we celebrate the opening of a new dormitory and the commencement of construction for the science block, in response to President Museveni’s initiative to promote science education,” Chev Dr Saturnninus stated.

He assured attendees that the Board of Governors remains committed to fostering upright young men grounded in African and Christian values, promising continued collaboration with all stakeholders.
