The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has dispatched the last batch of iron sheets pledged by President Museveni to the people of Karamoja, particularly the reformed warriors known as Karacunas.
The iron sheets are part of a commitment to provide over 100,000 sheets to Karacunas who voluntarily surrendered their guns and embraced peace.
While flagging off the final consignment at the OPM stores in Namanve, Peter Lokeris, the minister for Karamoja Affairs, commended President Museveni for his efforts in stabilising the region.
He was accompanied by his junior minister, Florence Nambozo.
Lokeris said the iron sheets would be distributed to the intended beneficiaries through district leadership structures.
He noted that the latest batch of 11,168 sheets was meant for reformed Karacunas who had not received them in the earlier phase.
Ministers Lokeris and Nambozo urged the Karamojong to prioritise peace to enable development in the region, which they said has the potential to contribute significantly to national food security.
Robert Ssemwogerere Mugarura, the undersecretary in charge of pacification and development at OPM, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Karamoja.
He said the iron sheets would help encourage settlement, addressing the nomadic lifestyle in the region.
Each beneficiary will receive 26 iron sheets to support the construction of permanent housing.
, OPM has now delivered 108,720 iron sheets to Karacunas and vulnerable groups in Karamoja.
