The Electoral Commission (EC) will on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, commence the nomination of candidates for various local government positions across Uganda, spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi has announced.

The two-week exercise, running until September 24, marks the first step for aspirants seeking to participate in the 2025/2026 general elections.

According to the EC program, nominations for district and city chairpersons, councillors, and representatives of special interest groups will take place between September 3 and 5 at district returning officers’ offices.

From September 8 to 10, nominations will be held for municipality and city division chairpersons, as well as councilors.

The final phase, scheduled between September 11 and 24, will cover municipal divisions, sub-counties, and town councils, where chairpersons and councilors will also be nominated.

Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of the nomination process, noting that only duly nominated candidates will appear on the ballot.

“If you are not nominated, you definitely cannot be on the ballot paper,” he said.

He further urged aspirants to pick nomination forms, study the accompanying guidelines, and ensure compliance with the law. The guidelines are available at EC offices and on the commission’s website.

The spokesperson cautioned candidates and their supporters against turning the exercise into political rallies.

“Nominations are not rallies. The Commission expects only those required by law to accompany candidates,” Mucunguzi said, stressing that processions, crowds, and inflammatory language will not be tolerated.

The nomination exercise forms part of the EC’s broader roadmap leading to the 2025/2026 general elections.
