The Electoral Commission has officially nominated six candidates to contest for the Kisoro District Woman MP seat in the upcoming by-election.

The two-day nomination exercise, which took place at Kisoro District Headquarters from Wednesday to Thursday, was overseen by Kisoro Returning Officer Daniel Nayebare, alongside Electoral Commissioner Anthony Okello and Robert Beine, the southwestern Electoral Commission supervisor.

The nominated candidates are Rose Kabagyeni from the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Salim Sultana representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Grace Akifeza Ngabirano as an independent.

Aisha Cyimpaye will carry the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) flag, Juliet Musanase for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and Mable Ingabire from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).

In his closing remarks, Returning Officer Nayebare confirmed the successful nomination of all six candidates, noting that five are affiliated with political parties while one is independent.

“As of 5pm, the nomination exercise has concluded without incident. Every candidate who reported at the venue was successfully nominated,” he stated.

Commissioner Anthony Okello expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the nomination process and encouraged the people of Kisoro to thoughtfully select their next representative.

He emphasized the Electoral Commission’s commitment to a free and fair electoral process.

“I commend the media for their role in sharing information and security for maintaining order. Despite our varied political affiliations, this process should serve to unite us for a stable Uganda,” Okello remarked.

The Kisoro District Woman MP seat became vacant following the death of Sarah Mateke, who had served as the district’s Woman MP and as the State Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

Kisoro District voters will head to the polls on November 14, 2024, to elect their new representative.
