Police have confirmed retrieving a total of 15 bodies following Wednesday’s mudslides in Bulambuli District.

On Wednesday, devastating landslides swept through Kimono Village, Buluganya Sub-county in Bulambuli District, leaving scores dead and many others homeless.

On Thursday, Police confirmed that 15 bodies had been retrieved while 15 injured had been rescued and admitted to Buluganya Health Center three.

“A total of 15 bodies have been retrieved, while 15 injured people have been rescued and admitted to Buluganya Health Centre III,” Police said.

Police also confirmed that the number of those still missing stands at 113, amid ongoing efforts to locate them.

However, police further said that rescue operations had been hindered by impassable roads, preventing vehicles from reaching the affected areas.

“The Police together with other sister security agencies with the help of the local community have intensified rescue operations, that is however, being hindered by impassable roads, which are preventing vehicles, including ambulances and wheel loaders, from reaching the scene,”

According to police, the Wednesday mudslides have affected five villages in Buluganya Sub County, of Masugu, Namachele, Natola, Namagugu, and Tagalu.

Relentless heavy rains have left the region vulnerable to landslides, with Bulambuli’s highland terrain particularly at risk.

Earlier, Hajjat Faheera Mpalanyi, the Resident District Commissioner of Bulambuli, said they were working with local authorities to assist in rescue operation and recovering bodies.

“We are coordinating with local authorities and rescue teams to assist survivors and recover bodies. This is a catastrophic situation,” she said.
