Politicians and civil servants in Mukono municipality have been warned to refrain from corrupt practices and deliberate obstruction of the planned road construction.
The caution came from Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, the minister of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, during the signing and handover of contracts to the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC).
The contract, valued at Shs. 46 billion, which will involve the tarmacking of Wantoni-Kame, Kame Annex Road, Albert cook road, cathedral Rise, Kame Katosi, and other roads within 18 months.
Kabanda highlighted that corruption has been a major hindrance to the successful implementation of government programs, leading to wastefulness and substandard work that costs the government significant amounts of money.
“I urge everyone to ensure that corruption does not impede the progress of our road construction in Mukono. The issue of traffic congestion has been a long-standing concern for the people of Mukono,” said Kabanda.
Kabanda further emphasized the need for proper budgeting and the procurement of high-quality materials to ensure the durability and reliability of the roads.
Francis Byabagambi, the Town Clerk of the municipality, expressed gratitude to the government for including Mukono among the first districts to benefit from the Greater Kampala Metropolitan program.
During the event, the Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, urged Mukono leaders to actively oversee the road construction to prevent the misuse of public funds.
The China Communications Construction Company Limited pledged to deliver quality work within the stipulated time frame and to establish a positive working relationship with the local leaders.
Currently, 80 percent of the road network in Mukono municipality is in poor condition and requires urgent attention to alleviate traffic congestion.
The Greater Kampala Metropolitan area program aims to improve the road network in the region and is being funded by the World Bank.
