The Electoral Commission (EC) has begun hearing petitions from candidates who were denied nomination for district chairperson, mayoral, and councillor positions.
According to the EC, 60 petitions were filed following the conclusion of nominations last week. The hearings are being chaired by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama.
Justice Byabakama said petitioners must demonstrate that they were deliberately and unfairly denied nomination.
“Where there are justiciable reasons why the candidate was declined nomination, then the petition will be dismissed,” he explained.
Most of the complainants allege they were turned away at the last moment, preventing them from being nominated.
However, the EC noted that a majority of these individuals appeared only on the final day of the three-day nomination exercise, which may have contributed to their disqualification.
