The 38th National Resistance Movement (NRM) Victory Day Anniversary, set to take place on January 26, 2024, is expected to attract approximately 800 dignitaries.
This annual event commemorates the historic struggle for liberation led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, which lasted for five years.
Minister for the Presidency, Babirye Milly Babalanda, announced that the anniversary celebrations will be held at St. John SSS Wakitaka Play Grounds in Jinja City’s Northern Division.
The decision to hold the event in Jinja City was made to recognize the city’s pivotal role in the liberation effort. Additionally, district celebrations will be organized nationwide, with local leaders responsible for selecting venues and dates following the national event.
Under the theme “Building a Country We All Cherish,” this year’s celebrations reflect the NRM Party’s commitment to securing the future of all Ugandans.
The chosen theme aligns with the goals outlined in the NRM Manifesto 2021-26, which emphasizes national development and progress.
“President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the leader of the liberation struggle, is expected to officiate at the national celebrations. The National Organizing Committee (NOC) has extended invitations to approximately 800 dignitaries, who will be seated in the Presidential tent,”she said.
To ensure the safety of all participants, Babalanda said comprehensive security measures have been put in place.
The Uganda Police Force will oversee overall security at the venue, with support from specialized units such as the UPDF among others.
During the celebrations, Babalanda said medals will be awarded to 53 deserving individuals, including the former Kyabazinga of Busoga, His Royal Highness Henry Wako Muloki OBE, who made significant contributions to the liberation struggle.
She also highlighted the achievements of the NRM government over the years.
“The country has experienced substantial economic growth, with the GDP increasing from US Dollars 3.9 billion in 1986 to US Dollars 49.4 billion in 2023. Infrastructure development, including the expansion of electricity generation and road networks, has greatly improved,”she said.
She said the education and healthcare sectors have witnessed remarkable progress, with increased literacy rates and enhanced medical facilities.
Babalanda urged the media to actively inform, educate, and entertain the public.
Journalists were encouraged to cover all areas of national interest, focusing not only on politics but also on issues related to national transformation.
The minister emphasized the importance of mindset change, combating corruption, and promoting Ugandan products with value additions.
The Patriotism Secretariat, under the supervision of Commissioner Helen Seku, will intensify efforts to foster patriotism and ensure responsible management of public resources across various sectors.
