A total of 20 inmates at Lututuru Prison Farm in Lamwo District have completed a transformative six-month vocational training program, equipping them with valuable skills in Horticulture, Building, and Concrete practices.

The initiative, a partnership between the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) and Agoro International Vocational Institute, focuses on rehabilitating inmates and preparing them for successful reintegration into society.

The graduation ceremony was presided over by Mrs. Margaret Orik Obonyo, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons (RPC – Northern Region), who praised the inmates for their dedication and emphasized the importance of such programs in supporting their future.

The prison’s Officer in Charge, Mr. Ben Gilbert Openytho, expressed pride in the program’s impact, highlighting the potential for inmates to find employment in agriculture and construction sectors upon release.

Mr. Benedicto Owali, Director of Training and Partnerships at Agoro International Vocational Institute, reiterated their commitment to continued support, ensuring the ongoing development of both inmates and prison staff.

The program covered essential skills including land identification, nursery bed preparation, pest management, post-harvest handling, and construction techniques.

These competencies are part of UPS’s broader strategy to empower inmates and foster independence. “UPS aims to reduce recidivism, currently at 13.4%, through initiatives like this vocational skilling program for inmates,” stated the Uganda Prisons Service.
